Inspirations from the International Contemporary Furniture Fair

Originally reported in BizBash Toronto, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair had some very interesting designs that can add flair to any event.

Sywawa Frou Frou parasol. I think this is totally outrageous as home decor, but a great inspiration for what you can do with chainetter fringe. Weddings can be a place to experiment and an outdoor ceremony or reception would be enhanced by tightly packed fringe swaying in the breeze. Translation to wedding decor: fringe hanging off of a chuppah or altar arch, a ceiling treatment in a loft, skirting for your tables or bars, and so much more!

Hiyoshia lamps. What I really love about these is that they are the next generation of the standard rice paper lantern. They are a Japanese parasol and inventive lantern combined. You can enhance the standard paper lantern to use at your wedding. Combine it with patterned paper, paint your lanterns, put colored bulbs instead of standard. Use your imagination!

Dose of Inspiration: Bright & Juicy Summer Wedding Florals

I love the juicy orange tones with bright green leaves. This modern, square arrangement uses a variety of different flowers (roses, tulips, dahlias, & dendrobium orchids) in sections to create a varied and modern look. Adding a candle to the middle gives the entire centerpiece extra glow.

The orange tone continues with bright cantelope-colored pomanders hanging from an altar or arbor. These pomanders are most inexpensively created with carnations (one of the best uses for the "cheaper" flower). A variety of orchids are brought together in this cone arrangement; some strung to hang down to the table level and create more visual interest.

I absolutely love this arrangement because it can be classic and modern at the same time. The purple color of the tulips pop above the wrapped green leaves. Came across this cupcake tree stand at Pink Cake Box. It is an idea I haven't seen before and one I love. You HAVE to cut the cake at your wedding. I know, I know, I agree that its your day, etc. etc. You still have to cut the cake. 30 years from now, if you don't, you will wish you did. This is the perfect combination. An upper tier to cut (or save for your first anniversary) and lower tiers of amazing cupcakes. In addition to being a more whimsical dessert, cupcakes let you give your guests a wider variety of flavors, and also help serve dietary restrictions (sugar free for diabetics, gluten free for celiacs, etc.). These cakes strike me as more birthday than wedding, but you get the idea!

Shower & Bachelorette Party Planning 101

This is a repost from one of today's Wedded Bits posts. Even though the tips were simple, I really loved them. We are holding my shower and bachelorette on the same day, and I am really looking for to it.

"One of my best friends (we go way back to the first grade) is getting married in July and I'm in the bridal party. There are seven of us in all who will precede her down the aisle, so it was our obligation and great privilege to raise a glass (then another and another...) and wish her well at her shower and bachelorette party. Fresh out of this experience, I thought I'd share a few simple things that helped make the show run smoothly and keep the guest of honor on her toes. (In addition to being a bride, I'm guessing chances are good that you're someone's bridesmaid too.)

1. Plan the parties back to back. This was the bride's idea and it was a really good one. With the shower early in the evening on Saturday, the transition to the bachelorette party later that night was very natural. The day was much more exciting and festive because of it.

2. Be organized. The bride's sister, her maid of honor, could give seminars on being organized. Everything went right because she was so on top of it all from the first day of planning. The shower was a group effort—we each had responsibilities for the prep and day of—but having one person take the lead was key.

3. Add the unexpected. We planned a few small twists for the bride to make the day more memorable. We gave her a customized photo book at the shower and cute personalized tanks at the bachelorette party, which had a subtle Hawaiian theme (a nod to her honeymoon destination). There were some other fun things I won't mention. We were celebrating a bachelorette, after all.

4. Be prepared for the day after. My friend's fiance lovingly armed his bride-to-be with the basics: bottles of water and Advil. This made me laugh. I'm not sure she needed the painkillers, but busy brides have little time to rest, even when they're out late the night before." —Michaela Garibaldi, assistant managing editor, Modern Bride

I had to mention the best wine line I've heard in quite some time. Swirl Events (a fantastic company that can provide great wine tastings fit to any event or theme) included a review of Champalou Vouvray's Chenin Blanc in their latest newsletter:

"Champalou is a stellar estate operated by the husband and wife team, Olivier and Catherine Champalou. Olivier tends the vines and Catherine oversees the winemaking.

Their lovely 2007 is complex with green apples, sweet ripe cantaloupe, stone fruits and great acidity. The key to balance with any wine showing residual sugar is acidity. It's the Yin to residual sugar's Yang.

The acidity in the Champalou does its job fabulously, providing a supportive backbone to the sweet, plump fruit.

As a varietal, I'd compare Chenin to Kate Winslet. It's secure in its full-body and compels in each and every role with intensity and class. "

Victoria's Secret Bridal Event with Mindy Weiss!

Jeff Leatham created a beautiful table display incorporating Victoria's Secret bridal lingerie.

Oh la la, Sunday my fellow bride (and client) Paige and I went to Victoria's Secret's flag ship store ("their most luxurious location ever") in NYC for a private bridal event. Cocktails and breakfast hors d'oeuvres were served by Creative Edge Parties. Beautiful black dress-clad sales associates were everywhere, ready to provide bra fittings, personal shopper services and anything else we could have possibly needed.

The entire store was closed save for about 50 lucky brides and their special guests. The bra salon on the second floor became a stage for Mindy Weiss who discussed her experiences (she loves Heidi and Seal - who renew their vows every year with a fantastic theme party! This year's theme is TPT: Trailer Park Trash). My favorite take away: Mindy hates favors! I totally agree. Unless there is something inherent to you as a couple, I hate when money is wasted on meaningless somethings that people leave on the table anyway. Other trends:

Florals are leaning towards more low centerpieces - no more high fluted vases. And clusters of smaller vessels on one table.
Food is still mostly comfort foods. People want formal sit down dinners, but they don't want something fancy that their guests won't recognize on the plate.
She is seeing a lot of DJs for weddings now (which probably has something to do with the economy) but cautions brides to make sure they interview them well. The WORST thing you can have at your wedding (aside from a beligerent great aunt) is a bad DJ!
Trends in colors include purple (aubergine and lavendar), navy blue is the new black, and bringing color into your reception with just the flowers.
Pack for your honeymoon early - start thinking about it now - Mindy sees a lot of stress in her brides the week of the wedding over what to pack for the honeymoon

Bride cotton panties that I can't find anywhere else: "Bride", "Hitched"

"Newleywed" (They also have pink and white binkins with a variety of crystal emblems - just married, newleyweds, an engagement ring icon, kissing lips, bride - Paige loved them!)

In addition to Mindy's fantastic advice (she really is wonderfully sweet and seems easy to talk to), Jeff Leatham provided gorgeous floral displays around the store. Apparently Jeff will have his own reality TV show on TLC airing sometime in the next few months (and yours truly was interviewed along with my beautiful bride sidekick Paige - look for us!).

The Victoria's Secret store on 58th & Lexington in NYC is gorgeous. They offer personal shopping parties. Bring in your bridesmaids and all of your dresses and they will help you find the best undergarments. Something that was said (and I really don't think it is a good point, even though clearly we were in a lingerie store where they were trying to sell us merchandise) is that so often we think about everything on the outside: dress, shoes, veil, jewelry. We need to make sure that we feel like just as much of a woman underneath of our wedding day.

And I will tell you, Paige and I made several trips to the dressing room and loved the merchandise at the 58th & Lex store! They have some signature pieces that you can't get anywhere else. We've decided that we need to start doing honeymoon layaway if you will. Buying a piece or two every few months, hiding it and banking everything for the honeymoon! What an easy way to spread the cost out across the year. Happy lingerie shopping!

Vacuum Cleaner Heaven: Bissell CleanView II

If you read on a regular basis you know that I don't ever talk about cleaning products, gadgets, etc. Unless they borderline unnecessary and belong on a gift registry, I usually don't think about them all that often. But I had to write about the Bissell CleanView II (for no other reason then I fell in love with it this morning).

Back story: My lovely husband-to-be decided a year and a half ago that he just had to have these two little kittens he saw on craigslist. Someone had found them living in an alley in a flower vase (both of them squished in there together). I won't go into details but since we've delt with waaaaayyy too many vet bills, unfortunately one little kitty not making it, and pounds and pounds and pounds of kitty litter - all over my carpeted apartment. Needless to say I've been fighting with a vacuum for over a year. On my hands and knees trying to get those stupid little pieces of clay up whenever someone was coming to stay in our apartment - hell. The vacuum finally died three weeks ago and I admit, I've been lazy. I didn't want to spend the money (even contemplated taking the vacuum to a repairman because I thought that would be more "recession-friendly"), but finally Wednesday I said: no more. We went to Target and got the vacuum above. It sat in the packaging until this morning. When I turned it on, I swear the heavens parted. Not only did it pick up all of the dust and grime on my floors (I had to empty it twice before I was fininsed), it picked up all the litter without even using one of the many attachments.

Thank you Bissell for helping to keep our home happy, and making sure that I don't try to kick my little kitten out on his behind before our wedding....

Eco Chic - Give Back on Your Big Day

It involved a small financial investment, very little effort from you and your groom, and a major difference in your wedding location! Special E has a wide variety of programs all over the country. They've been around for several years but were just named one of Modern Brides Trendsetters of the Year (good for Modern Bride recognizing the necessity for all of us to be a little more "eco chic").

Go to their website and fill out a Rescue Form and they will give you an estimated cost for your wedding. (I spoke to them yesterday about ours in San Diego and the estimate to gather all left over food, flowers and recycling for 200 people was only about $500!) Want some added value? They also have an Affaircare program which will purchase enough canned food to feed your entire guest list and restock a local food pantry. OR they will help reseed national forests by planting 1 tree for every one of your 25 guests. Amazing ways to help out and Special E does all of the work!

I encourage you to try to give back on your big day. Can't afford the added cost? Ask a family friend or bridesmaid to gather centerpieces and deliver them to a local retirement home or hospital. Just ask your vendors (caterer, florists, etc.) if they have a program in place or resources in the community to make sure that your wedding reaches a bit further - sometimes it is as simple as asking!

As the various gift and design shows I've seen the expensive version of these crafty little flowers, but this inexpensive retail version is fantastic. DIYers get to it with creativity, for about $30 you get 100 of these 3" x 3" flowers that can be assembled in SO many ways: curtain, vase, lampshade, let your creativity take flight. New York Fantasy Shower

The Search for Bridesmaids Gifts

This is the bag I would get for myself (and still might!)

So I am on the search for perfect bridesmaids gifts (girls: if you are reading this, move on!) I have two maids of honor, five bridesmaids, two flowers girls, and an amazing friend marrying us. All of these girls mean so much to me - I must find the perfect gifts to thank them for standing with me on the most important day of my life.

Okay, sentiment aside. I love giving gifts. And I don't like gifts that are standardized. When I give a gift, my ultimate goal is for the person to exclaim with joy when they open it. I think I may have a touch of gift-psychic in me (though I'll admit there are those people who completely stump me, you know who you are). I live in NYC so am constantly bombarded with stuff. I'll see something and feel that it would be perfect for this person or that person. Tough in this economy, when you are planning a wedding, since I can't stock pile these gifts for birthdays and holidays...

Enough about my gift giving. So I have been considering personalized purses recently. I came across the tote bag above and now I am thinking it might be better to give tote bags instead of purses the girls could use for the wedding. Some of them would never use those again... There are tons of designs by Ivan and Mary. I have my own in mind for all of my girls. Now I am just thinking about what other little trinkets I can put in them.

What are your suggestions for smaller monogram or initial items? As previously-stated economy concerns are in play, they can't be too expensive. Let me know your ideas and what you are getting to say thank you to your girls!

Party Rental Spring Collection

Love this color for spring and summer affairs. This linen is elegant but still casual enough for a warm weather event!

These napkin rings are my favorite accent on the table. Use your caterer's standard white china and napkins, but kick your design up a notch with these fantastic napkin rings!

Straight from the showroom, here are pictures from the Party Rental Spring Showcase last night in NYC. The biggest surprise for me: tables to match the economy. Gorgeous products but the showcase was not as elaborate as ones in the past. With this showcase and the marketing materials for Spring and Summer weddings, Party Rental is showing that they understand budgets are tight and they are willing to work with brides to make their dreams come true.

What does that mean for you? If you live in the tri-state area (NJ, NY, CT) take advantage of the Party Rental showrooms. Go with your wedding planner or designer (or with your MOH) and see the linens that they have, the flatware, china, glassware. You may not need to rent everything down to the water glasses (your venue or caterer should take care of this), but you can enhnace your table design with one or two amazing pieces. Maybe you go for a fork with an awesome design (they must have at least 20 different designs - and hey, your guests will have their hands all over them). Or you can opt for a water goblet that is incredibly chic or in your wedding colors (see the pictures below). One small element will be easier on the budget and enhance the look of your table!

The best thing about renting: someone else takes everything away at the end of the night, they clean it for you, and you get to go away on your honeymoon without a care. Not to mention the rental industry is inherently green, using the same pieces over and over again saves on waste!

Mint fortuny linen adds a little bit of texture to your table without a big price tag. Several plates and chargers are showcased here, but you can create the same look with just one. Simple votive candles (usually included in your package price at the hotel or venue) add a glow to the table. The wedding colors are enhanced with green water goblets (see close up below).

I love these goblets because of the etching. They are fancy enough for a formal affair and casual enough for a backyard wedding. If you aren't setting an extensive table, guests can use them for water or wines!

The Wedding Salon - Manhattan

I attended The Wedding Salon this week at the Roosevelt Hotel. The event looked fantastic on paper. Ice bars doling out champagne, Colin Cowie, Sylvia Weinstock, gorgeous gowns, a lingerie lounge by Victoria Secret. However, when I arrived, the line was twisting through the second floor of the hotel straight down to the entrance. As I got closer to the front of the line, it was apparent to me that the disorganization had created a bridezilla environment. People were searing, frustrated, and more. When I signed in I was told there were no more gift bags - understandable since I arrived several hours after the event had started. However, I had to reflect on how easy it would be to simply create a registration cap for the event and avoid all of this drama. In today's economy, even the wedding shows created for the high-end bride end up looking like a bargain basement sale...

That being said, there were some gorgeous designs in the Roosevelt Hotel ballroom. Talented event designers and florists set tables to show exquisite spring wedding possibilities (see pictures). I was also able to talk wit hSylvia Weinstock and sample some of her cakes - not only is she amazingly gifted in the art of sugar flowers (I swear I couldn't tell if they were real or fake), but her cakes taste second to none. I had the same conversation with Ron Ben-Israel a few months ago. He said that this year they were really focusing on quality and taste of his cakes, as well as new amazing designs.

It seems that everyone has had a return to basics and even the high-end vendors have to supply 100% quality. In the wedding world, things are no longer about a name, but about quality and value.

The Wedding Luncheon Designs

Each year, wedding and event professionals meet at The Special Event to learn about the new trends in the industry and the hottest new products. Part of this conference is the coveted ticket to The Wedding Luncheon. This year's conference in San Diego featured a Wedding Luncheon at the Hard Rock San Diego with guest speaker Carley Roney of The Knot. While the discussion was informative, the design was out of this world. See my favorites pictures here and even more in the slideshow above. There are MANY more images to come, this is just the beginning.

The luncheon highlighted the latest trend of black and white. Several different table styles were used throughout the room. Every detail was thought of from elegant chair covers, to charger plates, cascading floral arrangements, crystals, and candlelight.

Event professionals were also treated to three design galleries, featuring the works of talented designers. Each showcased different dining table, cocktail table or ceremony designs. See more of these designs in the slideshow featured above. This is one of my favorites, creating an earthly feel with silk leaves on the table. The best part: each hemstitched linen napkin is embroidered with the name of a guest, tripling usage as napking, place card and favor!

Event Glamour at the Oscars

Black and white is everywhere right now (including Elton John's AIDS fundraiser). Incredibly chic for any event, you can play with it for any wedding. Add a splash of color to brighten it up or Art Deco and crystal accents to play up its elegance.

Inverted parasols are a great ceiling treatment (and a great way to move away from Chinese lanterns). Cluster them together over a dance floor or spread out (like above) for a more whimsical feel. They are also very inexpensive!

A bonsai tree as the centerpiece! Though perhaps this is a bit extravagant for your wedding, think of ways that you can be eco-chic. Including live plants and potted flowers are a way that you can save on waste from your wedding.

Square lanterns in the center of the table are covered with moss and florals. Use an acolyte lantern (electric candle), a paper shade with a battery-powered bulb, or a luminary with a few candles. This is a way to create a centerpiece that includes flowers, but doesn't feature them. This works especially well with long, rectangular tables where you can highlight the candles with a table runner.

I've seen it many times, the bride and groom are so nervous and concerned about everyone else on their wedding day that they spend the day worrying.

I've seen it, too, where the bride is so caught up in the last minute details it takes her until the 2nd course before she settles down.

You've spent lots of time doing your research, meeting vendors and choosing the best people work with. Each of your vendors should be experts in their field. Let them do their jobs. You've got to trust and let go.

Do all your preparation, make your lists, have meetings with your vendors and be sure they understand your vision. Then when the big day comes sit back and enjoy what you've created. Let it wash over you like a beautiful wave. Let it flow. Some things may not go exactly as planned, but no one will know except you. So just stay in the moment and take it all in.

One of the biggest keys to making great wedding photos and portraits is to just relax. Allow yourself to be comfortable and enjoy. This is the way to ensure you look your natural best. Make sense?

And the more your guests see you enjoying yourself, the more they enjoy themselves, too. The last thing your friends and family want to see is you stressed out on your wedding day.

You put your heart and soul into this day, and the advice I hear over and over again from trusted vendors: breathe. Make sure you remind yourself throughout the day to take notice of what's going on (even if you have to get your Maid of Honor to hit you over the head and make you pay attention :-). Live in the moment. You only get to live this day once so make sure you surround yourself with people who are passionate about doing a good job, and MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FUN! I guarantee if you are having fun, your guests will be having fun, and no one will notice that a different white wine was served or that Uncle Art hit the bar one too many times.

Tiny bunches of green berries attached to natural wood folding chairs is an inexpensive and still elegant way to bring color to your ceremony aisle. This is something that you could even create on your own - find a local flower market and ask a bridesmaid to decorate the chairs! (Floral design by Botanica.)

L'Auberge Del Mar has a gorgeous view that worked perfectly with the chocolate brown, orange, peach and green hues. I love square tables - if your venue has them - they make simple set ups look more elegant and give you more space to play with.

Square containers can be wrapped in weathered paper or gold leafed for extra rustic elegance. Peach roses, green hydrangea, peach and orange dahlias and green and red hypericum berries continue this fall look. The chcolate brown votive candles are another way to tie your color scheme into the table and dress up basic glass holders.

I thought this article in Ceremony magazine was interesting. It shows designer tables and exactly what they cost (all of these tables were created by Kathy Wright & Co. & photographed by Paul Barnett). Too often you see a picture in a magazine and don't understand the associated price. This leads brides to think they can't afford a beautiful table, or even worse, that they can have a million dollar table for a not quite luxurious budget. Sorry for the poor quality (scanning) but I think the designs and price tags are really great. Remember - working with professionals is the best way to save money in this economy. Let them share their tips and tricks and use the vendors they have relationships with!

Glitz and Glam - Table Linens that are Sure to Dazzle and How to Get the Look for Less

Your guests will be spending a significant portion of your wedding reception at dining tables. Thank them for being a part of your special day with comfortable chairs, gorgeous table linens, and all of the table top details. Wedding designers know the benefit to customized linens and intricate table top details. The warm glow of candles makes all of your guests look spectacular. The feel of a damask print linen is much more luxurious than a basic cotton or satin. And this may not be as expensive as you thought. Working with wedding coordinators or wedding design specialists will make sure that you find the best deals around. These professionals have relationships with vendors that ensure you have the latest trends and best prices at your wedding. While designing your wedding alone might be daunting, engaging the services of one of these talented professionals will ensure that your day is worthy of a princess. However, working with talented professionals is also the way to take these high-end ideas and transform them into something that works for any budget.

Featured in this picture: Bronze metallic brocade table cap with rhinestone trim; Bronzine dupioni silk and lemon ice taffeta striped skirt; bronze metallic brocade chair cap with rhinestone trim; lemon ice taffeta upholstered chair cover; bronze dupioni silk covered chandelier with rhinestone trim. Gold chargers and taffeta napkins are at each place setting, finished with rhinestone napkin rings. Red roses in three different size spheres sit on dramatic amber glass holders.

This is a lavish look that can be recreated for less. Dupioni and taffeta are among the most expensive fabrics. Talk with your event designer about using a most cost-effective material. Don't custom upholster chair covers, work with a rental company that has something ready to rent. The cap for the table allows the designer to use a more expensive linen on the part of the table that guests will see the most of. Chair caps aren't always necessary, but there are also a wide variety of these available for rental. It isn't likely that you will have a chandelier over each dining table (though that would be nice), but you can use additional cuts of fabric to decorate your venue - drape them from the ceiling, use them to create a stage back, or create a swagged entrance treatment.

Also featured on the table are gold julep cups in various sizes mixed with amber glass containers. Bright pink and yellow spring florals dress this table, but the look would work just as well with darker jewel toned florals for a fall or winter wedding.

Featured in this photo: gold duchess satin double dinner napkin; pink gold taffeta napkin band; gold rhinestone buckle. Also on the table is a glass beaded charger plate and a closer view of the gold containers used for florals, that each have a tarnished, gold-leafed appearance.

Work with your event designer to create a similar table for less money. A solid table skirt will cut your cost, and when it is surrounded by more chairs, will not be as visible as in this picture. Custom chair cushion are lovely, but no necessary. Most rental companies will include chair cushions with chiavari chair rentals. An upgrade to a custom color made be available for a small fee, or try creating cushion covers in a solid fabric. The same beaded charger plates are available from most rental companies - anything you can find in acrylic will be less expensive than glass. Custom linens for chairs are a great addition to any design scheme, but not necessary. Standard chiavari chairs (such as the one pictured) can easily be accented with ribbon or organza to create a similar coherent look at less cost. Single sided napkins will usually cut cost and most of your guests won't notice the difference - they are usually backed with a less expensive fabric. While napkin rings are a fantastic addition to the look of any table, remember that they will only be in place for about 30 seconds until your guests tear them off. Unless they are something reusable, their effect will then be over - so don't spend your money here!

Featured in this photo (my favorite!): smoke glitter dot overlay; platinum duchess satin base cloth; platinum duchess satin double dinner napkin; platinum napkin band embellished with button and crystal. Also featured is a black deco chandelier and smoke Victoria ghost chairs. This is a modern yet elegant table that also provides some texture to the table. Black glass containers and candle holders on the table add to the modern edge. Again, beaded glass charger plates fit well with this theme (they are versatile and can go with a more traditional or more modern look).

The overlay makes the look with this table. Cost savings can definitely be found with a less expensive base linen. Remember though, the feel of the base linen against your guests legs is very important. This overlay is created with glitter appliques, however a similar design but be created with embroidery or a print for less money. Standard ballroom chairs or chiavari chairs will save money. Ghost chairs are among some of the most expensive rental items available. Because they are clear plastic they scratch easily, therefore they are very hard to maintain. Again, there is a savings with simple sided napkins. Look for creative ribbons that are inexpensive to use as napkin rings, not an embellishment of costly buttons and rhinestones.

The moral of the story is: working with event professionals is the way to go no matter your budget. Vendor connections and many events allow them to get the best rates and reuse custom items for multiple events. I recommend contacting Fourth Wall Events (www.fourthwallevents.com; 212-316-0052) who is well-versed in corporate and wedding design and can work with any budget (they are also really fun to work with).

Brand New Wedding Dress for Sale

Forgive me for using this blog for a personal post. If any of you (or those you may know) are interested, I'm selling a brand new, never-been-worn wedding dress. I bought this one in June and have been carefully storing it since. I fell in love with another dress last weekend, and thus have to find this one a new home!

I bought it as a sample, yet it had never even been used as a sample. It is in perfect condition, no need to have it cleaned. It is a Watters Bridal dress, style 9052B. Ivory silk shantung with a trumpet skirt (very light and easy for dancing :-). It has a sweetheart top and beautiful pleating throughout the bodice. I have more pictures that I can send you.

New from Party Rental for Fall 2008

Seen above and below are some of my favorite new looks for the Fall 2008 season from Party Rental Ltd. (see web information below). Most of the items featured on the tabletops can be rented from Party Rental (available in the Northeast Region).

The Theory Rouge linen above is one of my favorite looks for this fall season (I'm actually using it for a large corporate event later this year). I will be honest and say that this picture makes it look much more orange than it is. The true base color is closer to rust and is a beautiful fall pattern. The embroidered mosaic is simply gorgeous! I'm not crazy about the red flowers shown here - I suggest pairing it with orange and terra cotta colors with accents of red (mokara orchids or coffee break roses work beautifully). Showcased on this table are the following: chocolate church napkin with a gold rose filagree napkin ring, gold square pebble charger (which matches the mosaic on this linen perfectly), square glass woven dinner plate, freeform four plate, freeform cup, black goblet, elan red and white wine glasses, black handled flatware and square frosted votive candle holders.

This Remington Gray linen (print premium) is a great twist on a standard look. It reminds me of pinktuck (you will see basic taffeta linens in a variety of colors that are sewn into a diamond-shaped pattern). The diamond pattern and medallions in the center all add texture to linens. I love when linens feel nice as well as look nice! The flowers here are a bit more classic in a gold urn. Featured on this table is baby blue church linen napkin with a silver oval napkin ring, a brown metallic circle charger, imperial dinner plate, medici soup bowl, carnegie hill flatware, gold rim bell water and wine glasses, and roly poly candle holders in frosted gold and silver glass. This look is great in a country club or historic hotel ballroom.

The Lexus brown and green (print premium) linen can be matched with a variety of patterns and textures in the same color palette. You can make this look a bit more modern (as seen with the sleek silver metal container) or a bit more traditional (by pairing it with a damask print). The flowers are calla lilies, green cymbidium orchids, bells of ireland and more for a sleek look with a touch of color. It is shown here with chocolate church linen napkin with a square lucite napkin ring, gold venetian glass charger, glass dinner plate with gold beads, origami gold rim lunch plate (interesting square edges with circluar inset), kings palace flatware, paloma water and wine glasses, gold beaded votive candle holder, and a plain glass votive candle holder.

Edgewater Purple linen has a whimsical bubble and squiggle line pattern. The darker purple color gives it more elegance while still being fun. The flowers that you put on the table will define whether it is a fun daytime spring table or a more sophisticated evening wedding. It is showcased here with lavender church linen napkins with ecru not napkin rings, violet pebble glass charger(the one on the bottom), glass dinner plate with silver beads, deco dot lunch plate, black handled flatware, amethyst flute tinted glassware (I love tinted glassware, it really adds something different to the table), platinum rim bell wine and water glasses, eggplant crack votive candle hodlers and lilac magnolia votives (the marbelized ones).

Fall Flower Inspiration

I recently went to the Party Rental Ltd. Fall Open House (see more on the new items available later). They had the best fall arrangements there - and I'm not sure who the florist is - arrangements that you really just want to take a bite out of.

The arrangement featured above featured burgundy and wine red dahlias in a rustic pot. I love dahlias, though they can be hard to work with since they aren't always consistent looking.

This is a close up of baby watermelons that the florist wrapped, still on the vine, around the rustic container. I LOVE this - probably one of my favorite floral finds so far this season.

The second fall arrangement incorporates a variety of seed pods. This has a more elegant weed feel, but would mesh very well with a rustic farm, barn or ranch wedding. The different color berries add some fall colors. You can easily incorporate a few seed pods into your arrangements or bouquets from any season - they really lend something different and interesting to your florals.

Fall-Inspired Vases

Fall is a great season for weddings. The darker color palette instantly separates it from a summer or spring wedding. Why not use Mother Nature's vases to help bring the season to your reception tables.

This is something to embrace if you really want to bring the fall season into your decor. Mouthwatering Dessert Displays

Amy Atlas (of Amy Atlas Events) is known for her signature dessert tables. Here are some pictures that can help inspire you. Aside from the bride, the wedding cake is usually a focal point of the reception. So you have to make sure that your dessert table is not only appealing to the stomach, but appealing to the eye. Tables like the one above (Mod Dessert Table design) have many ideas that you can pull from for your own wedding. The use of bold graphics above, in the wallpaper and the cake, really pop and catch the eye of your guests. Golden Gerbera daisies are a whimsical and less-expensive flower option. Adding the black glassware creates a very sophisticated design.

This Seasonal Dessert Table is dressed for Halloween, but with a few quick changes, it can accommodate your fall wedding. Inexpensive paper fans are hung together to create a sculptural look. Buy a standard bulletin board and cover it with your favorite fabric or wrapping paper. Straight pins hold pre-assembled bags of candy (these could be escort cards), while more bags can be available to encourage guests to create their own assortment. I love the "Take a Sweet" message created with sugar cookies. What better way to let your guests know they are invited to partake than with cookies! Just be careful that the ring bearer doesn't steal a letter before the reception begins :-)

We are getting married on November 7, 2009 at the Don Room at the El Cortez in San Diego, CA. My fiance is from San Diego originally, and we want to share our love of the city with our friends and family. Kathi Skillman, Director Sales, Marketing & Events for the Don Room is amazing to work with and really helped me since I live across the country! I called and spoke with Kathi and in only a few weeks I felt comfortable enough with her and the beautiful venue to sign a contract without ever having seen the venue (something that, as a planner, makes me inherently nervous).

The El Cortez opened as a hotel in 1927 and has been one of San Diego's finest landmarks ever since. At its opening, it was the first high rise in the city. The hotel was known for its Sky Room and the "Starlight Express" he chic exterior glass elevator that transported guests to the top of the building. The ballroom is octagonal and has a 24 karat gold ceiling. It was so amazing that it hosted the weddings of San Diego's most prominent families and dinners for visiting dignitaries.

We love it because of its originality. I love the octagonal shape of the room with a dance floor in the center - it makes the entire reception feel more intimate. The 10,000 square foot terrace will be where we have our ceremony. There is plenty of space for the ceremony and to transition into cocktail hour and a lounge after dinner. They have a fountain and a big fire place to add to the ambiance.

Hello Readers!

So where have I been? I apologize to those of you who have wanted to read, but haven't seen anything new. I know, it has been a long time since I have posted. Let me fill you in on the details.

Last May I was lucky enough to be on-site producing my first incentive program. Aside from putting together amazing events for our client's guests (see pictures below), I had to be away from home for 23 days. On day 18, after a long day setting up an event, ending in humidity and pouring rain, I went back to my hotel office. A security guard knocked on my door, and told me that a guest wanted to see me in the lobby bar. I thought this was highly unlikely, but because my birthday was a few days away, I suspected that something was going on. Little did I know what was going to happen.

The security guard led me to the corner of the bar where I saw a glass of wine and a note. The note said "Happy Birthday Love, look in the corner." Sitting in the dark corner was my boyfriend! He had conspired with my boss and flown all the way to Bermuda to surprise me. I was caught WAY off guard and hadn't even begun to realize that he was really sitting in front of me, when we jumped out of his chair and got down on one knee!

He had shown up over 8 hours before, and due to the weather had had to hide in the lobby bar. (Note: the hotel is very small and I had walked by the bar at least 50 times that day setting up my event.) He had wanted to propose to me on the beach, but thought that the second I saw him in Bermuda I would know what he was going to do (Note: I had no idea, as I thought we were at least a year away from being engaged). I was so flabbergasted that I couldn't even go to the dinner reservations he had made. I made him order room service with me in my hotel room. He left less than 24 hours after he had arrived, and I continued on with my work for the last five days with a HUGE smile on my face the entire time.

So here I am, hoping to recommit myself to showing you new and innovative products, designs and ideas for your wedding and for our wedding. I hope that you continue to enjoy what you read.

Repurpose Your Wedding

We are at the height of the eco-chic trend right now. I support recycling, repurposing and being as sustainable as possible. You create your perfect moment, but pieces of your moment can be distributed after the event to make so many others happy!

Sound great but don't know how: there are many ways that you can help spread the love with the leftovers from your wedding.

1) Talk with your vendors:
- Ask your florist if he/she works with a company or organization that can benefit from your arrangements. Can she deliver the arrangements to a hospital or nursing home instead of just throwing them away? (This may incur a slight charge for delivery, but is well worth the money in karma!) You may even want to ask a family friend or bridesmaid to collect the centerpieces and deliver them on your behalf.

- Talk with your caterer about donating left over food (not the food put out, but any over purchasing or food that was not served). Many caterers have partnerships with organizations that will package and collect the food for distribution to local homeless shelter and soup kitchens. If your caterer doesn't usually do this, ask if they would be willing to start (they may decide to incorporate this into all of their future events - karma bonus). If they are unwilling to do the organizing, you might be able to call an organization yourself and ask them to come and collect leftovers at the end of the night.

- Talk with your venue about recycling. If the environment is important to you, exercise your power when you are choosing your venue. Ask what policies are in place, and choose a venue that is environmentally conscious and follows a strict program. If you have to have a venue that isn't so eco-savvy, talk with the manager about ways you can reduce waste and energy. One way might be to purchase enough wind energy credits to power your wedding. (A service available in some areas now through your local power company. Though you aren't actually being powered by the wind, you are purchasing an equal amount of wind power to offset your electricity usage. While you are at it, switch your home bill over to wind power, as well. It doesn't cost an extra penny!)

- Resell or donate your decor items. You can look into sites like www.usedeventstuff.com or www.craigslist.com. You may even want to try ebay. Believe it or not, all of these sites are recycling! You may even recoup some of your wedding costs (which you might want to donate to the organization of your choice...)

Still lost at home to go about this? Contact Special E (www.thespeciale.com/works.html), who will send their Rescue Squad to collect leftovers from your event. They take the lot back to their collection site, sort through it repurpose flowers, direct food to a pantry or food waste to a composting center. They charge an administrative fee to organize this, and are available in many markets, including NYC, LA, Seattle, San Jose, San Diego, Portland, Boston, Las Vegas, Houston and a lot more!

Truli Wonderful Cakes

I love the pearlized blue and the wonderful large blue flower (looks so real!)

Complete with uber-elegant orchids and a grand gold bow, this cake is stunning and simple.

The dark brown base color is something unique, as is the pattern pressed delicately into the fondant. This base color can compliment a variety of wedding colors.

Highlighting the damask trend, this cake with an ivory base twists the trend by using red and an intricate gold ribbon pattern.

Here we see the same delicate imprint on the base of the cake. The yellow tone is beautiful and the delicate sugar parrot tulips hold sashes of white fondant (I have a thing for parrot tulips - and the sugar ones hold up much longer than the real ones!).

Fresh Florals

I saw this great display of fresh florals in a Pottery Barn eblast (you cxan get all of the containers from Pottery Barn!). The bright and fresh ideas include using a combination of containers in unique ways. Small circular container inside a larger one or a fluted bottle inside a glass cylinder. It also uses different elements in the same containers, highlighting the contrasts: limes topped with gerbera daisies.

I've taken a little bit a hiatus (really work has over-taken me), but now we are back with all of our new design updates. I've been saving them up for weeks, so this will start the deluge of great ideas. And what better time than now, when wedding season is in full swing, and all of you brides-to-be are buzzing with prep work!

I just loved the vivid color of this orchid display. It was used to highlight a sponsor (hence the bottle), but the point is that fantastic florals take center stage no matter what the container.

This floral design was used as a centerpiece for a fashion event. Not that I want you to put these on your tables, but it shows that truly gifted floral designers can create anything! Believe it or not, the traditionally under-appreciated carnation squishes and conforms to create fantastic shapes and designs!

I love thed modern and unique design of this floral arrangement. The event them was a modern Parisian cabaret, and I really love the look of the design!

Calla lilies and orchids join together on top of bamboo to create this delicate, yet modern, arrangement.

I love the look of this modern chandelier: a tray suspended from the ceiling, overflowing with florals! Great for a lounge or loft space.

I escaped to New Jersey this weekend (for my grandmother's 80th birthday party) and what else is there to do but go shopping at the mall. I was walking around with my girlfriend and we inevitably ended up browsing in a few of the jewelry stores. It got me to thinking about engagement rings. These rings are straight from the pages of The Knot and you can search for them to find more details (and about a million more styles). But these caught my eye and I wanted to share them: This is my favorite, the one that I would walk around with on my hand! It is a Tacori design, with a round cut center stone and pave diamonds around the center stone and on the band.
Tacori platinum and diamond eternity engagement ring
Tacori ring that is modern yet classic: emerald cut center stone with Cadillac cut side stones. To me the center looks like it is shining like an icicle.
Tacori round brilliant cut center stone with pave diamond accents. I love that the setting for the center stone and the pave accents make this ring sort of look like a flower.

Ritani platinum carved, semi-mount ring. I love the fine detailing on this ring, it makes it classic but truly stand out.

Hearts on Fire Lady Di solitaire ring. I love that this looks like something fit for a Princess of Wales. Though it loosely resembles a snowflake, I think that this is a cute you rarely see in an engagement ring.

Kirk Kara designed this setting to have accents of round cut sapphires and pave diamonds. Including the sapphire stones in engagement rings is actually a tradition started in the Victorian era. This ring would certainly count for your something blue!
Mark Patterson round cut center stone with pear shaped side stones. I love the antique feel of this ring. It is good for someone with smaller hands who needs skinny band, but still wants the glamour of a larger center stone.

Mark Schneider Design: this unique band features 48 pave diamonds with a four-prong setting.

A. Jaffe round center cut diamonds with fancy bullet side diamonds. This thicker band gives it a little more of a modern look.
Mark Sepkus created this unique ring. The rose gold band holds round cut diamonds in a modern pattern. If you are the anti-bride looking for an engagement ring that doesn't look like an engagement ring, this is great option. You can also get the band in yellow or white gold.

Bird & Banner Hand-Crafted Invitations

Bird and Banner was started by Erin & Nicole in Philadelphia when they were brides-to-be. Now they help you create interesting and unique expressions for your wedding stationary (or really any celebration or blank note card). See some of the examples of their creative work below.

Real maple wood cards in a hydrangea blue sleeve for a wedding in Vermont. A great way to show your guests that your ceremony with be elegant, yet unique.

This wedding used custom silhouettes of the bride and groom on wedding stationary, favors, and as you see below - even the cake topper!

The RSVP cards were each place in hand-stitched pouches, conveying the coziness of this wedding.

They created a custom invitation that showed how the groom had traveled for 5 years on the Chinatown bus from Washington, DC to New York City to see his future bride.

A fantastic idea for a more casual wedding. The save the date was printed onto a lobster bib for a Cape Cod wedding. If this is a little too informal for your reception, perhaps use it as an invite to the rehearsal dinner or welcome party (great photos will be made from this!).

Invitations were printed on silk handkerchiefs to embody the French Flea market theme of the wedding. They also printed on the backs of old postcards, each unique.

Sweet & Simple Spring Arrangement

My colleague made this arrangement a few days ago to help our office celebrate Spring (we don't have windows, so we do what we can). As gorgeous as it looks in a vase, while she was creating it we realized that it would be the perfect bouquet, tied off with some buttery yellow ribbon. The arrangement includes daffodils, fluffy white peonies, fragrant white lilac and a wildflower variety with a golden center that we found at the flower market.

Working with a flower professional will really help you take your bouquets and arrangements to the next level. Watching my colleague gather these flowers strewn about the floral warehouse was amazing. Professional who work with flowers have such vision and knowledge about the products they work with. From a million variety of flowers they can create billions of beautiful mixtures.

Don't be afraid to go to a green market, wholesale flower market, or even just your local floral shop to look at the variety of flowers in stock. If you have more than a year to plan, it is helpful to see what will be in season during your wedding. Take a look at what calls out to you. Talk to people about how each flower holds up. (Remember, you will be dragging your bouquet around for hours and he will be hugging everyone he's known since kindergarten - your flowers have to be durable as well as beautiful.) If food will be very important to your reception, make sure that fragrant blossoms on the table won't interfere with the eating experience. Ask about something new, something different (like our wild flowers above), or how hard it is to get something exotic. Be green conscious - ask where the flowers come from and how they are grown. Consider if having a bouquet of locally grown flowers would not be more meaningful than having pink peonies flown in during the winter?

Aren't familiar with flowers or can't decide which to choose? Grab a different bouquet each week and live with them. See which flowers you respond to. What bouquets light up your morning before you leave for work. You are the bride-to-be, so make sure to buy yourself flowers!

Have Your Cake (and Like Eating it Too)

What are you paying for your guests to eat - $65, $85, $105, $150 a person to eat. You have to be able to have your cake/filet/tofu and like eating it too. Foodie or not, you probably understand that it isn't just about slapping the food down on a plate and serving it to your guests (or maybe that's what you like, if so, feel free to skip this :-) Eating can engage more than just your taste buds.

A tasting is the most important thing when hiring a caterer (in addition to getting along with your contact). But you should also review photos of their presentation techniques. You don't have to have a Pablo Picasso or a Jackson Pollock, but find a caterer who can jazz up your cocktail hour or buffet with their own creative interpretation of your theme.

I love these hot dog lollipops from Elegant Affairs. (I had the pleasure of eating them). The presentation was great: a Lucite tray with each "lollipop" on a tall Lucite stick).

I happened to miss these, but they look fantastic. This tray looks like (and very well may be) a simple votive holder that you can buy in a variety of styles. Instead of candles, fill it with your hors d'oeuvres. (Again from Elegant Affairs.)

2Taste Catering served these gazpacho shooters with a test tube of vodka. Cold soup shooter, in a variety of containers and tastes, can be a very refreshing hors d'oeuvre for a summer wedding.

I love these mini crudites. The tray is what really stands out in this picture along side the modern square dishes. You can create a tray out of anything (picture frames of the two of you, music books, travel magazines, anything), tying it into your theme or highlighting quirky parts of your personalities. I LOVE the presentation of this dessert. It takes a simple pudding or mousse with berries to a whole new level. Be careful if you will have an older (or slightly less-sophisticated crowd), you don't want to serve food that will scare away your guests. In the end, taste matters, and your guests can't enjoy it if they don't know how to eat it. (Shiraz NYC)

Decor and More - Tabletops and Other Touches

I know, I know. This week I can't get enough of tabletop pictures! Now is heavy bridal planning season, and what better to help you decide what you like, you love or you hate, than inspiration pictures!

I love this picture because black and deep gray are colors that no one thinks to use for weddings. Why not turn the traditionally-shunned color into a fantastically elegant affair? Luxurious black/gray linens pop with touches of Kelly green (one of this seasons hottest trends).

Black and white with a pop of red is a way to keep things trendy yet traditional, with a bit of sizzle. This arrangement is kept creative and fun with a few suspended roses inside the clear glass vase. You'd be surprised at the amount of black rentals you can find now.

I love the long tables. They allow you to get creative with centerpieces. They actually keep conversation flowing as people are closer together and fully facing one another. Custom linens can become a bit tricky, but with the right venue, this look is totally worth the effort.

I love this dramatic table, though I recommend using this type of arrangement on a display table rather than a dining table. Again, not a fan of the ottomans (oy my back), but I love the colors and intricate detail of the fabrics. These colors together can sometimes border Easter-y, however they look authentic and elegant here.

I love square tables! It is not something that you normally see outside of the large metropolitan areas. Rectangular tables can seat more and still mix up the look of your reception. Here table runner are criss-crossed. No matter the size of your table, try draping a table runner down the center, and then draping a runner across the table in a perpendicular manner, creating a place mat for two facing guests. Notice here that they not only use chargers, but large leaves as chargers and part of the centerpieces!

Deep red is not usually a color that you think of for weddings. For the right season (and the right couple) this color will create all of the rights kinds of drama. See how interesting pieces can be used to bring together the color scheme (including this urn "lamp"). One intense red gobo helps to create a back drop on an otherwise bland wall.

I love the surprise of these tables with center square of Lucite. You can include an LED (light-emitting-diode) light underneath each table. As the night progresses, courses change, you cut the cake, anything, you can change the colors underneath each table by wireless remote!

The intricate detail on these gorgeous orange linens really makes the table. The string of flowers at each corner lifts the linens just slightly to creating elegant draping, but also is an unexpected way to blend the top linen with the bottom linen.

This may not seem like a wedding picture to you, but I LOVE this idea. Here you see a table fit for an event in the Southwest or an event highlighting the culture of either the bride or groom (or both). Custom chair covers were created out of traditional blankets - something that could be translated to fit any wedding.

This chair looks like a bridesmaids dress. Accented with a beautiful "corsage," the flowing material is elegantly draped. (This is a great way to use extra fabric, or to avoid having to rent standard chair covers).

Magnificent Napkins

The perfect way to add detail to your reception table is with a napkin accent. Each little detail is a welcome for your guests, a special reminder that you think each and every one of them is special.

I encourage you to look at interesting way to dress your napkins. Different folds, pins or antique jewelry, ribbon, and more. If you can, avoid putting favors on the table (arrange them later as guests are leaving) in lieu of a small napkin detail. See some examples below, but don't be afraid to get creative with your own!

If you can't incorporate a bold pattern into your table linens, try using it as an accent in your napkins. You may even think to use it on napkins as well as chair pads or toppers. Here a brightly colored brocade pattern (from Wild Flower Linens is accented with an orchid).

A fantastic fold that is simple to execute and looks elegant. When using a charger with another plate, wrap a silk or lamour napkin under the plate, accent with a napkin ring. This ring can look like anything to match your decor! Secure a menu card underneath or place in a matching frame at the head of each place setting.

This is a fantastic napkin decoration and favor! A small bouquet of daisies sits at each place setting. Simple cotton striped napkins are folded into a square pattern. You can also use menu cards in this arrangement, but be sure that all vases are dry before placing them. Tie a ribbon with a simple card around each vase if you wish to have place cards.

Having a destination wedding or want to highlight one of your cultures? Use traditional accents at each place setting. Here a bird woven from grasses is elegantly poised on a linen napkin tucked underneath an appetizer plate.

For this Moroccan-inspired table, the brightly-hued napkin compliments the jeweled charge plate. The tropical blossom sits on top of a bright, beaded pin. All of the colors work together because they are jewel-tones.

I love the elegance of this napkin. It would be hard to execute for each setting but the flowing folds and the simple bloom look amazing. Definitely try to replicate this look for a 1920s elegance theme. (I would be wary of the jewels on the table though, will never stay that way!)

Again, another simply elegant napkin setting. This silk or lamour napkin is delicately rolled, secured with an orchid (wired around the napkin) and fluffed at the edges.

This napkin is arranged on the plate and accented with a vintage pin. You can also use antique jewelry on menu cards or the backs of chairs. Pins serve a functional purpose for outdoor wedding where wind may be a problem.

What do you do once the guests have been seated and napkins begin to go into service? Alert your caterer that you will be having napkin decorations (they may have already helped to set them in place). Let them know if you wish for servers to collect the remnants after serving the first course, or if you intend for the decor to be a gift to the guests. Trust me - it is worth the first look!

Hot & Modern Flowers

Traditionalists look away, these flowers are not for the faint of heart. Check out the limited edition styles from Ovando. Easily adaptable to fit your reception theme, these plays on traditional flowers are amazingly creative.

The moral of this story: you don't have to settle for boring arrangements. If your florist looks peckish at the sight of these centerpieces, keep looking. Florists are artists, and each person has their own style. Just as you search for the photographer who will capture your wedding vision, you should search for the florist who can bring your flower vision to life. Decor by Lighting

Already using a lighting designer for your wedding? Or are you interested in creating something out of the ordinary? Why not consider creating your decor with lighting. Experienced lighting designers (your venue may even have a partnership with a lighting company already) can add amazing ambiance to your event.

Lighting can add some jazz to traditional decor: pin spotting centerpieces (focusing a small light fixture on each centerpiece), uplighting columns or architectural structure (pointing a beam of light up to highlight a part of the existing room), or providing a gobo or moving lights (providing a light with a pattern, sometimes your monogram, that can even move and change color throughout the evening). But how about creating decor with lighting?

Look at the examples below from Levy Lighting. This tree and rug projection were created for a recent International Special Event Society meeting in New York City. One light fixture each created these images in different parts of the room. Other areas featured projected chandeliers.

Remember, when you are interested in making custom linens or creating a unique look yourself, you have to have a way for guests to get their legs under the table! It can't just look good, it has to be functional.

Again, a glitzy affair fit for a purple-loving diva. Beware of these linens: anything with sequins can look better than it acts. Always see it in action before committing yourself. You don't want bent sequins on your table, or something that will scratch the arms and legs of your guests all night long.

Simple Flowers

If you don't have a huge floral budget, or just aren't that interested in flowers, there are many way that you can use simple arrangements to make a big statement. Sometimes a beautiful vase with a single flower on a clean table, cocktail table, or coffee table can look amazing. On an escort table or buffet, create a row of the same simple vases for dramatic effect. If you want to go with a more simple vase, such as the glass one below, choose an interesting shape or etching and fill with a simple nosegay.

Choosing simple arrangements can help to emphasize a casual theme for your wedding. It will also bring down the cost of flowers and materials. Consider finding a flower market or wholesaler in your area and putting these simple arrangements together yourself. Even more sentimental, ask to use cuttings of flowers from the garden in your childhood home or from a place that is meaningful in your relationship (with permission of course!).

Light Tricks for Multi-Purpose Rooms

If you will be using the same space for your ceremony and reception (or reception dinner and lounge after-party) consider some simple lighting tricks to break up the space. The picture above shows a simple white muslin curtain suspended from the ceiling at various points. A simple lighting pattern (called a gobo) can be used to create a static image. Consider having a custom gobo created with your monogram. If you want to upgrade, you can invest in lights that move or change color, to keep the look fresh all night long.

Another great trick with lighting allows you to use the same spaces for different parts of your wedding. One light setting will create the mood for your ceremony. Guests will have cocktails in an adjoining space and when they return, the room will be transformed by a different color. Linens and decor pieces that will take each color of light are helpful (white or pale colors).

I am constantly inspired. Pictures, books, magazines, restaurants, artwork. I try to look at my surroundings constantly and use influences for my weddings and events. I used to think that cell phone cameras were completely unnecessary - why would I need to take a picture at the drop of a hat, I don't have children. I have since learned that they are fantastic design tools. I see a display or flower arrangement that I like and I snap a picture for my file.

I want to know what inspires you! I know that you all have scrapbooks with dresses, flowers, invitations, colors, anything that inspires you. Haiku for Your Honey

A totally unique idea that I found on the pages of Daily Candy. This is a phenomenal idea and a perfect addition for a proposal, Valentine's Day, engagement party, wedding invitation, your vows, anything!

Tonette Hartmann is a haikuist based near Washington, DC. She will construct a personalized haiku about your favorite person. Just email her special details (could be about your groom, could be about you both as a couple) and she will construct a meaningful poem in the 5-7-5 structure.

She also offers an add-on package with a framed print of your haiku (other haikus are simply sent to you on paper). A perfect keepsake for anniversaries to come!

Alternative to Table Linens

You don't always have to coordinate table linens. I'm sure you won't be surprised when I say: they can get expensive! Aside from basic cottons, when you start to incorporate patterns and prints you can get incredibly expensive. Try to go custom with table linens and you may blow your budget all together. So why not look for modern tables, like the ones above, that don't need linens? It won't work for every reception - maybe chiffon and lamour fabric are your dream - but if you could take or leave tablecloths, look into leaving them. Many rental companies will have finished table tops - some even have tops that look like modern art. They will cost a little more than the standard run-down table, but the savings on linen should balance out!

Hollywood Glamour for Your Wedding

If you are like me, you would love to complete a million-dollar, over-the-top production for your wedding. But then again, you think about it, and you think that something intimate and elegant is the best way to go. Regardless, I think that pulling something from elegant Governor's Ball that is the official after party for the Oscar's is a way to infuse your reception with the drama of Hollywood.

If you notice, there are many previous posts where I show pictures of Oscar and Grammy party balls. For the Hollywood elite, these are a perfect canvas for event and design companies to create truly outstanding events. Just like fashions on the runway trickle down to stores where you and I shop - event design from the Oscar parties and Grammy parties trickle down to our events - like your wedding!

The pictures below are amazing, and you will see the difference form the sample tables created for the same event. Lighting really makes a huge impact - as does having hours to take these incredibly wonderful photos. Let them inspire you. Use them to create a little piece of Hollywood drama at your event!

Rental items can really enhance the theme or color scheme of your wedding. Instead of just going with the same old hotel or caterer china, why not look in to something like these amazing red water goblets and wine glasses? It may seem intimidating if you aren't used to it. If you are sticking to a bear bones budget - I don't recommend it. But these rental items cost less than you think. Most costing under $2 each (depending on what you choose, well under)

You can see the amazing balls of roses on the fluted crystal vases. The other wonderufl thing are the architectural elements around the room. The things that not everyone thinks about. You can see gold draping in the doorways. Also, tufted gold panels on the walls.

I am seeing a lot of lamps and candelabra lamps on tables now instead of large floral centerpieces. These lamps are clear glass and reflect the patterns of light in the room beautifully.

This table is full of elegance. As you see, if you consider colored glassware, you do not need to include it on every table. This table has a different look with a swirled runner, clear glass chargers and clear glasses.

The most amazing part of this event are the hanging glass baubles from the ceiling. Also something that you can create on a smaller scale. You can find baubles or vases like this at Ikea or Crate & Barrel. Even if you can't create a hanging sculpture like the one above, you can hang them from a tree on the property of your outdoor ceremony. Hang them to create an entrance in your tent. Hang them directly over the dance floor in a single line. Fill them with candles. Fill them with colored water. Put single flowers in each one. There are endless opportunities to make this type of piece look perfect for a garden wedding or a black tie affair.

Design That Caught My Eye This Week

Images that I have collected this week. They all caught my eye in a different way and you can take this inspiration and use it for your special day!

Want to capture all of the drama of the Grammy Awards? Lighting design and crystal chandeliers up the elegance factor. You can take the same idea and hang a rented chandelier over your dance floor. Accent it with draped luxurious fabric (try red for maximum drama).

This small centerpiece is inexpensive and has big band for a reception with a chic lounge feel. This also works well for a pool-side rehearsal dinner or after party. A glass cube is lined with slices of lime (incredibly inexpensive!), LED ice cubes (which you can also use in drinks for your guests) glow in the center, and a few gerbera daisies sit in the center. You can also fill the cubes with acrylic rocks and place water-resistant LED lights in them if fresh fruit won't work with your design.

Pulling off this look in its entirety might be a bit too much for your wedding (posing flower-decked model...not so much), however I love the idea of creating a table beneath a table. Clear plexi or custom-cut glass tops sit over the regular table top. You can fill the bottom portion with flowers, apples, glitter, anything really! The hanging orchids on the branches is also another wonderful trick. Try this if the ceilings of the room will be very high. To minimize cost, you might construct this try as your escort table and hang escort cards from the branches and/or orchid strings.

Chandelier of branches with hanging votive candles. Something that can be dressed to fit any wedding theme. This one looks very rustic and would work well with a vineyard-themed wedding. This is great if you have high ceilings. It creates all the drama without loosing the site lines at your table. I recommend asking a professional to handle this, as they know how to best construct the apparatus (and will make sure that it doesn't fall apart on your guests heads!). Ask your florist to look into manzaneeta branches - available from growers for about $20 for a large branch.

This is a gold place setting used for an India-inspired event. This showcases how using one color and layering it on top of itself can be very dramatic.

One of my favorite pictures from this week. This Moroccan-inspired lantern is turned into a topiary with a bed of moss and brightly-colored flower stems. You can lower the cost by doing this in a smaller scale. Change the color of the lantern. Add candles or one small votive. You can even look into placing live butterflies or birds inside the cages (make sure to look into environmental requirements for butterflies and line up homes for the birds before hand). The best things about this look is you can dress it to fit so many themes!

Damask and black & white - two things that are very hot right now. The ghost chairs at this setting really allow you to look right to the tables. The lamp shades double as candelabra - creating a unique look without using a lot of flowers. The tall centerpieces can be overwhelming if you have a lot of tables, but they also ensure that site-lines are open for guests.

Clear acrylic is very hot right now in more modern settings. You can change this look slightly by using an acrylic candelabra (they come in a variety of colors). You can also change it up to include only beads or crystals and not flowers, or to take off the shade entirely and use candles (votives or tapers).

Black & white is shown here with incredible elegance. The modern look of the two colors isn't overwhelming, with the simple burst of color from the roses in the centerpiece. The black stemware is very understated, but still elegant. The black chiavari chairs tie everything together.

I absolutely love this look. Again, we're seeing a different take on centerpieces, moving towards the lamp look. This one is constructed with orchids in water. You can find a way to create this with a standard vase, plate at the top holding a candle, and a lamp shade (just make sure that the shade and candle don't cause a fire!).

A very simple look, but still fun. If you are looking for a very different centerpiece consider using mirror balls. This look works especially well for New year's Eve weddings, receptions with a lounge feel, or after parties with a club atmosphere. This doesn't have to be the centerpiece of the dinner table, it can be on cocktail tables and high boys. Just make sure to not only invest in the mirror balls, but in the lighting. You will have to have the tables pin spotted so that the light reflects off the mirror balls. The fantastic dots floating all over the room and your guests will really be worth it!

How to use a Family Gown

I saw this idea when I was browsing on Portovert and thought is was spectacular! Mom or Grandma's gown may have a tone of sentimental meaning, but that doesn't mean you want to forgo the Vera Wang for it. Personally, my mother weighed 97 pounds when she got married and I can't even get her dress over my thighs....

But how to include that special garment in your own wedding. Create a chuppah using the fabric. You can even blend fabrics from Mom, Grandma, your Mother-in-law-to-be. The possibilities are endless! Not Jewish - come on, everyone can create a little altar cover!

Who knows, you could start a family trend. Each woman could add a piece of her gown, adding to the happiness of the family as your tree grows. Momentous thought huh?

Tarnished jewelry. OK, we exaggerate, but if you want your jewelry to really shine, it needs a good polish from time to time. Bring back the twinkle faster than you can say "Here's Johnny" with with nontoxic eco-methods.

Avoiding horror-inducing chems. Some conventional jewelry cleaners contain ammonia, which is a lung irritant.
Eco-gleam. Less body-harming chem production means less chance of those chems harming nature. Ammonia, for example, can be toxic to aquatic life.
Effectiveness. These options shine things up like the pros.

This sweetheart top and the simple elegance of the ribbon with the flowers is one of my favorites. The A-line frame would look beautiful on all kinds of body types. The soft and filmy looks is exactly what a wedding dress should be.

Look Like the Stars

Are you all about the Hollywood glitz and glamor? Why not model your reception after one of the opulent awards ceremonies? The Oscar Ball is produced and designer by Sequoia Productions, with florals provided by Mark's Garden and rentals by Resource One (which I've featured many times before). The Grammy Award's after-party is being produced by Along Came Mary. Both will have fabulous food by Wolfgang Puck. See below for glamorous inspirations:

Round tables with black and silver damask linens. Silver candelabras are accented with swags of crystal beads. The same type of red rose spheres are lifted above the table, but these have black feather plumes at the top.

Wintry White and Brown

A way to deal with basic ballroom decor (no matter how chic, ballroom carpet never seems to go with anything) is by adding drapery. In the pictures below you will see white chiffon draping covering sections of the walls, and small carpets creating groupings of furniture. The elegant, shimmering fabrics and sparkling touches give a sense of wintry sheen for this reception. The touches of blue can be dainty in spring or icy in winter.

Stone planters look traditional, but the arrangement of white florals creates a unique picture.

This long long table is a great option for your head table. Instead of seating to just one side, chairs line both sides of the table. Round tables sit in the remaining areas of the room. The long brown table runner accents the length of the table, and the tall fluted vases create height. Blue menu cards add a touch of icy elegance.

My favorite part of this look! Brown satin fabric is used to cover ballroom chairs. Though a little more time-consuming than fitted seat covers, this beautiful draped look creates a sense of elegance. The lighter fabric keeps it from looking too heavy, and the whole look is topped off with a sparkling snowflake-inspired brooch (which is also utilitarian, as it holds the fabric together). This look can be recreated with different fabric types and colors, and with different style pins to match each season and palette.

Fantasy Tent Decor

My fantasy tent. This structure was built for an after party for the SAG awards. Even though it wasn't constructed for a wedding, this is so elegant you can take these ideas and apply them to your tent.

Tent weddings can be some of the most expensive because you are creating a space from scratch. You have permits, weather issues, and incredible labor costs to deal with. But tent weddings can also be some of the most beautiful because you don't have to conform to existing structure.

This tent has a custom gray silk layer. The beautifully draped liner adds that extra umph of elegance. Most tent companies will work with you to rent an existing liner or create a custom piece. This tent also has plush gray carpeting - a fantastic addition (which keeps all of your guests heels from getting stuck in the grass), but also costly. You need a sub floor to put that carpet on!

The floral accents are my favorite - tall columns create a place for arms of flowers to float above guests heads. You can incorporate this in a number of ways. You can run tracks of flowers across the existing poles of the tent. Suspend columns or balls of flowers from the ceiling. Drape strings of flowers down to create a dramatic curtain (orchids work well for this). Suspend a floral chandelier over each table.

The other thing that I enjoy about this set up is the lounge atmosphere. Of course you may not want your entire reception to be a cocktail party. If you want to include a sit down dinner, why not consider a section (or another smaller tent) set up as a lounge. It is a great way to extend the party, serve dessert, cut the cake, enjoy the band or DJ, anything! Or even create a smaller, more intimate lounge tent, in bright, fun colors that you can use to hang out with family and the bridal party after the majority of guests go home. It is a way to really get to spend time with you closest friends after your hectic day. A way to showcase another design sense, and a way to splurge a little on the people that you love the most!

Linen Inspirations

I wanted to throw in some linen inspirations for all of you who may be trying to decide colors and decor right now. All of the items below are available for rental (though some may only be available to trade professionals - meaning your caterer or planner will need to organize it). See the end of the post for website information.

This is called Turquoise Irish, and I am predicting that this shade of blue will be the next trendy color in the fashion world, and in the wedding world for gutsy brides who want to make a colorful statement! (Nuage)

Shellfish-trimmed Raffia (this natural table topper creates a very sophisticated beach setting) (Nuage)

Purple Quilt linen with deep purple accents, including gorgeous fluted vases with tinted water. The best part about these vases are that their thinness won't block sight lines across the table too much. (Nuage)

Pesto Confetti - this glittering table topper creates a very dramatic table presentation. You will have to see it in person. From a personal stand point - I've had shirts made of this material and they can get slightly annoying. I think it looks beautiful and different, but you will need to sit at the table and see if it will scratch the arms or your guests (and if you will sacrifice this for style :-) (Nuage)

Peacock - this linen brings together the wonderful colors of peacock feathers. See my older post on my love for incorporating peacock feathers into your decor scheme. (Nuage)

Olive Crushed Velvet. I love this picture because of the fantastic, creative arches down the center. Crystal arches cascade over the moss table runner. This is very labor-intensive, but would make for a fantastic look (something to try if you will have only a few long tables seated for 10 or 16). (Nuage)

Cornflower ruffle over a bronze base. The clear ghost chairs allow you to see this beautiful table without interruption. The beach background probably doesn't hurt, but this dramatically-tall candelabra holding a unique arrangement of flowers is the perfect crown to this gorgeous table. (Nuage)

Black Chincilla linen added a wintry air of elegance to your wedding. I wouldn't suggest using this furry linen on every table, but use it as an accent to create drama. Continue the texture on all of the tables with this menu and napkin wrap with a sparkling pin or earring (look at antique or vintage stores for earrings, then split up the pair to get double the use). Black and White Carol - the pop of Kelly Green. The coral pattern allows you to have this look as a very sophisticated beach theme. Or take the coral pattern away and replace it with damask (VERY popular right now). (Nuage)

Apple Green Quilt with beaded bronze charger. This bright linen added color and texture to your table top (Nuage).

Gold Leaf Sheer overlay adds filmy elegance to any underlay. This is a great example of how to use a silk (or real) orchid as a beautiful napkin roll. (Party Rental)

Brown Zebra. I love the feeling of being of safari (not surprising that is where I want to honeymoon). If you can't make it to Africa, why not try something different and bring the jungle to you for your wedding - or if that is just too much for your mother, try it for the engagement party. This zebra pattern is brown and white is still subtle enough to be considered elegant. You can dress it up or down. It can stand on its own in a room or you can add vines, thatched roofs, anything, to build in that jungle atmosphere. (Party Rental)

Bellagio Mist. This is a thicker table linen, so best used in colder months so that you don't overwhelm the tables. As I mentioned above, the damask pattern is huge right now. This cornflower blue and brown pattern is beautiful and won't overwhelm the room. Choose silver or gold accents, glass vases, and flickering candles to accent. (Party Rental)

This is probably my favorite picture that I have shared with you. I find this incredibly beautiful and simple. It would look stunning in almost any situation, and you can play with many varieties. While you can test out creating your own similar arrangement, I would suggest consulting with a florist to produce this - getting it right takes a lot of now how.

This table top competition had real water trickling down the umbrella and into a basin on the table. Now unless the two of you met when your umbrella blew away during a monsoon - this is probably not the way that you want to go. But the other elements of this table are adorable - the glass cake trays topped with a matching cloche., glass teapots, splits of champagne dressed in raincoats (again, corny but I thought it was cute), and my favorite - a pair of rain boots in colorful patterns for each guest.

This table setup is again unique, and using miniature truss and LED lights. This is not something that you want to try to set up on your own, but variations of this creativity could be stunning at your event with the help of professionals.

I loved the elegant beach twist on this table. Usually beach weddings are thought to be very casual a laid back. This table captured that spirit, while still allowing it to be elegant. A beautiful blue satin chair pad matches with the swatch on the chair, wire in place with a large starfish shell (you can collect real shells from your ceremony location, or use a faux variety found in stores). A filmy organza overlay on the table actually travels down under chairs, giving the sense of frothing waves (I don't recommend doing this, as one pull of the chair by a guest and bye bye tabletop), and you can adapt this with a slightly longer overlay that creates small piles at the bottom of your tables. And embroidered pillow with a coral pattern sits at each chair - a great and useful gift for your guests. Matching napkins are tied on the table (if you have a beach house, commandeer the pillows and napkins for use in the years to come!) sitting next to sea glass chargers, on drift wood-inspired blocks, and accented with a pure white seashell.

Here are the next batch of inspirational pictures from The Special Event. They really focus on lighting and how you can use it to change not just the space where you hold your ceremony or reception, but the actual tables, chairs and centerpieces.

You can do amazing things with light. You can dress all of your tables, chairs and china in white. Then use amazing lighting all around your room to change the color of the reception with each course! You will need to hire a professional, but the white decor absorbing the light (even use patterns) will be an exciting change for your guests. Splurge and have a custom gobo (used to create a pattern with a lighting fixture) created to project your monogram onto the dance floor or behind your head table.

Custom white columns give an elegant, yet unique and edgy, quality to any setting. Pomanders (balls of flowers) are hung inside the structure. It resembles truss, a more industrial-looking element used to hang lighting at events, but works very well in the right setting. The great thing is that these pieces are free-standing, so you can put them anywhere (at the altar, entrance, around the room) and if you use a wireless, battery-operated LED light, you have to need to run wires around your room.

This centerpiece mimics the look of the column above. A truss-like "cage" is created around a whimsical arrangement of white tulips. Using floral foam and moss, the tulips are placed randomly throughout - it has a very sculptural quality. The table has a plexiglass center that is lit by a color-changing LED light. You get a remote control, so you can change the colors at all of the tables or a few of the tables as you wish.

I absolutely love this cake for two reasons. The pattern is in one color, so it can work with a variety of color schemes, but the circles really make it fun. You can copy just this cake pattern. I also love the stand - a plexiglass cylinder is running through the center filled with crystals. They have also added lights throughout the cylinder so that it glows. Plexiglass shelves hold each section of the cake. You can create any look that you choose with this set up - put flowers inside the cylinder, sand, anything you are thinking. You can even have the structure created so that you can see more of the cylinder in between each tier.
